Putting God first does not mean you have to spend every moment praying, reading the Bible, or attending church. It means allowing your relationship with Him to guide your choices, priorities, attitude, and actions throughout the day.
Life can become busy quickly. Work, family responsibilities, financial concerns, social media, and personal goals can compete for our attention. Without realizing it, we may begin giving God whatever time and energy we have left.
The good news is that putting God first does not require a complicated routine. Small, intentional choices can help you remain connected to Him during ordinary moments.
Begin the Day With God
The way you begin your morning can influence the rest of your day. Before checking notifications, emails, or social media, take a few moments to acknowledge God.
You can start with a simple prayer:
“God, thank You for another day. Please guide my thoughts, words, and decisions. Help me honor You in everything I do.”
Your morning time with God does not have to be long. Even five focused minutes can help you begin the day with peace and purpose.
You might read a short passage of Scripture, listen to worship music while getting ready, or write one thing you are thankful for in a journal. The goal is not to complete a religious task. The goal is to turn your attention toward God before the demands of the day begin.
Include God in Your Decisions
Many people pray only when they face a major problem. However, God also cares about the everyday decisions that shape our lives.
Before agreeing to an opportunity, making a purchase, responding to a difficult message, or choosing how to spend your time, pause and ask:
“Does this decision honor God?”
“Am I acting from wisdom, fear, pride, or pressure?”
“Will this choice bring me closer to the life God wants me to live?”
You may not always receive an immediate answer, but pausing creates space for wisdom. It can prevent you from reacting emotionally or making choices you may regret later.
Make Prayer Part of Your Routine
Prayer does not have to happen only in a quiet room with your eyes closed. You can talk to God throughout the day.
Pray while driving, cleaning, exercising, cooking, or taking a break from work. Thank Him when something goes well. Ask for patience when you feel frustrated. Seek strength when you feel discouraged.
These short prayers help you remember that God is present in every part of your life, not only during church services or devotional time.
Instead of waiting until you have the perfect words, speak honestly. God already knows what you are thinking and feeling.
Read Scripture Consistently
Reading the Bible helps you understand God’s character, recognize His guidance, and strengthen your faith.
You do not have to read several chapters every day. Start with a realistic goal, such as one chapter, one passage, or ten minutes of reading.
Consistency matters more than quantity.
Choose a time that fits naturally into your schedule. You might read during breakfast, on your lunch break, or before bed. Keep a Bible near your desk or use a Bible app when you are away from home.
As you read, ask yourself:
“What does this passage teach me about God?”
“What does it reveal about my own thoughts or behavior?”
“How can I apply this today?”
Scripture becomes more meaningful when you connect it to your daily life.
Choose What Influences Your Mind
What you repeatedly watch, read, and listen to can shape your thoughts and desires.
Putting God first may require setting boundaries around content that encourages anger, comparison, temptation, fear, or negativity. This does not mean you must avoid every form of entertainment. It means paying attention to how certain content affects your spirit.
Consider replacing some of your usual media time with worship music, Christian podcasts, sermons, devotionals, or encouraging conversations.
You do not have to remove everything at once. Start by becoming more intentional about what receives your attention.
Practice Gratitude
Gratitude helps shift your focus from what is missing to what God has already provided.
Each day, name a few things you are thankful for. They do not have to be dramatic. You can thank God for a meal, a safe place to live, a helpful conversation, a new opportunity, or the strength to complete a difficult task.
Gratitude does not deny that problems exist. It reminds you that your problems are not the only things present in your life.
When gratitude becomes a habit, it becomes easier to recognize God’s goodness in both ordinary and difficult seasons.
Serve People With Love
Putting God first also affects how you treat others.
You can honor God by being patient with someone who is struggling, checking on a friend, encouraging a family member, helping a neighbor, or showing kindness to someone who cannot repay you.
Service does not always require money or a large amount of time. Sometimes it looks like listening without interrupting, forgiving an offense, sharing a resource, or offering support.
When your faith changes the way you treat people, others can see God’s love through your actions.
Obey God Even When It Is Uncomfortable
Putting God first is easy when His direction matches your plans. The real test often comes when obedience requires sacrifice.
God may lead you to end an unhealthy relationship, forgive someone, admit you were wrong, become more disciplined, stop participating in harmful behavior, or wait instead of forcing an outcome.
Obedience may feel uncomfortable, but choosing God’s way protects your peace and strengthens your character.
You may not understand every instruction immediately. Faith means trusting that God sees what you cannot see.
End the Day With Reflection
Before going to sleep, take a few minutes to reflect on your day.
Ask yourself:
“Where did I notice God today?”
“Did my choices reflect my faith?”
“Is there anything I need to confess, release, or handle differently tomorrow?”
Thank God for helping you through the day, and give Him the concerns you cannot solve overnight.
Ending the day with God can quiet your mind and remind you that you do not have to carry every burden alone.
Focus on Progress, Not Perfection
There may be days when you become distracted, skip your devotional time, react poorly, or allow other priorities to take God’s place. Do not let guilt convince you to stop trying.
Return to God.
Putting Him first is not about performing perfectly. It is about continuing to choose Him, seek Him, and realign your life with His will.
Start with one small change. Pray before reaching for your phone. Read one passage of Scripture. Pause before making a decision. Thank God for three things before going to sleep.
Small choices made consistently can transform your relationship with God.
When you put God first, you are not guaranteed an easy life. However, you gain clearer direction, stronger faith, greater peace, and the assurance that you are not walking through life alone.
